Hello, again! I never got around to posting an update last week…we got a lot done but it was a little hard to tell. Mostly drywall, priming, and ceiling stuff, so not very exciting…
This week shows some progress! Reid (and company) tiled the shower with white subway tiles and finished grouting it today. I love it. We decided to go with a dark gray grout to get more contrast; it will lighten up some once it dries but should still stay quite dark.
It was more work than we anticipated but it was worth it, in my opinion. I like that it adds an industrial touch to an otherwise rustic room. I’m really trying to avoid being too literal with the ‘farmhouse’ style and I think mixing in some urban elements will create a nice balance.
“Mom, I’ll do ‘cheese’!”
The downstairs is now primed and painted and ready for trim, after the floors get refinished. I didn’t get a picture of it completely done but we chose white paint so you get the idea. Have you ever stopped in to grab white paint? I mean, there’s an entire book dedicated just to white. Good grief.
Our plans for the stairs are to paint the risers white and sand and stain the rest to match the floors. Under the stairs is a little built-in desk.
The kitchen is still empty but the cabinets have been ordered! Hooray! They should be ready in a couple of weeks. We ordered our countertops and I’ve been pricing out appliances…I’ll hopefully place an order tomorrow. It was a tough decision! There have been so many decisions to make and I’ve been feeling very overwhelmed at times. Like with the cabinets, for example…what type of wood, what style panel, straight edge or beveled, one door or two, glass or no glass, what kind of crown molding. Oh, and white? Choose from these fifteen shades. Help! It’s a good problem to have, though, and I’m certainly not complaining. I am so excited for this kitchen.
The upstairs hasn’t really been touched yet so that still looms ahead. I started to fill in the holes in Matilda’s room but that’s as far as I got. We’re hoping to get away with just painting and refinishing the ceilings and floors for now. And updating the light fixtures, of course. I asked Matilda what color room she wanted and “pink!” was the response so we have a gallon of ‘bare pink’ ready to go up in her room. The rest of the rooms will be white…maybe we’ll add some color later on but for now I’m just ready for a crisp, clean slate.
Plans for this week: sand the floors, purchase trim, order appliances, work on the upstairs…and the ten million other things that always seem to pop up. There’s always something! Just part of the beauty of an old home, or that’s what we tell ourselves, anyway.
